Miss Truitt, I presume?

11/14/2016

The evidence is in. A 1784 Orphan's Court record for Hezekiah Truitt includes the names of Traney Truitt and Eunice Truitt. Additionally, a 1784 probate named Trany Truitt and Eunice Truitt as executrix and administratrix for the personal estate (not land) of Hezekiah Truitt of Sussex County, Delaware.  The probate described both women as spinsters, which is consistent with what we know of Eunice; her first child, Comfort Dutton, was born on August 30, 1786, suggesting she may have been married in later in 1784 or in 1785.

The total value of the goods and livestock was 59 pounds, 8 shillings, and 4 pence.

As discussed in my previous post, given that Eunice Dutton named her first son Hezekiah Truitt Dutton, it's likely that she is the same Eunice as named in the documents. This also links the orphaned Eunice to John Simpson, her uncle by marriage, which may explain the name of her second son, John Simpson Dutton, and the selection of Clement Simpson, her first cousin, as the guardian of Comfort and Minty after the death of their father.
